Welcome to PhoneTrack

Introduction

PhoneTrack uses your phone's GPS to log journeys as you drive, and automatically determines periods of travel and time stopped.

Within PhoneTrack, these periods are referred to as Journey Legs and Journey Stops, and there is the means to tag them with additional details.

The main purpose of tags is to record information which can either be presented in reports or used as a filter: e.g. all business or private travel, distance and time travelling to a particular customer etc.

Journey Leg Tags

For journey legs there are five optional tags which can be set by selecting:

Journey Leg Tags
  1. Type: Designed to indicate the nature or purpose, such as travel to or from work etc.
  2. Use: Mainly to indicate business or private use of the vehicle
  3. Distance Rate: A chargeable rate based on distance
  4. Time Rate: A chargeable rate based on travel time
  5. Notes: For any other details

Journey Stop Tags

For journey stops there are three tags:

Journey Stop Tags
  1. Type: Designed to indicate the nature or purpose, such as a customer visit etc.
  2. Time Rate: A chargeable rate based on time stopped
  3. Notes: For any other details

As a shortcut, there are two slider controls on the home screen so that the most commonly used tags can be quickly changed

Journey Leg Use Slider

Slide left or right as required.

To change the tag assigned to a slider, touch and hold it to bring up the menu of choices. Alternatively, this can be done in settings.

Start Recording

To start recording, press the button:

Start Recording

If GPS is disabled, PhoneTrack will prompt for confirmation that it should be enabled. If confirmed, the corresponding system settings page is displayed, where Use GPS satellites should be checked.

PhoneTrack may also prompt for installation of the Text-To-Speech engine. This is used to provide a level of confidence that recording is active without the need for a distracting visual indication. If not needed, this can be switched off or altered.

Configuring speech notification

Movement is detected either by exceeding a speed or distance threshold. This constitutes the start of a journey leg, which continues until recording is stopped or movement ceases for a given period of time (the default is 3 minutes).

At this point PhoneTrack will store the time, position and distance details along with any attribute settings.

Currently journeys are associated with travel within a day, and PhoneTrack will also log a stop unless the leg is the first. Similarly, the current stop tags are stored as well.

Once the start of a journey leg has been detected, two meters are diaplayed.

Each can be configured to show one of the following in real time:

To change the quantity assigned to a slider, touch and hold it to bring up a menu of choices. Alternatively, this can be done in settings.

Mark Arrival or Stop Recording

To stop recording, press either stop above, or the button:

Stop Recording
Mark arrival is used to indicate that you have arrived at an interim destination, but that you would like PhoneTrack to continue recording.

PhoneTrack will prompt for confirmation to protect against inadvertent selection.

Places

By default, PhoneTrack tags the endpoints of journeys with an address provided by the Google look-up service.

However, there is the ability to have a list of known places which will override this with a more informative tag.
